Many moons ago, I was a parish minister. But even though this was in a pretty progressive and open-minded religious movement, it still wasn't quite progressive and open-minded enough to stomach some of the more radical things I wanted to say ... let alone the more radical ways I wanted to say those things.
I eventually left the active parish ministry ... but some part of me still wanted to stand up and say these radical (in all senses of the word) things to anyone I could find who would hold still long enough to listen. Under those circumstances, I guess it was inevitable that I would find my way to spoken word performance.
For the past year or so, I've been making the rounds of various spoken-word open mic events in San Diego. In the process, I've compiled a nice little pile of prose-poems/rants. For awhile now, I'd been posting them in my LiveJournal, but I found I wanted to give them a home separate from all the personal-journally musings in that blog.
Meanwhile, I had written and performed one particular piece, "In Praise of the Big O", that got a lot of enthusiastic audience response. In fact, after one performance some audience members came up to me and said "So when are you forming this First Church of Whoopie? We want to come!" And thus the idea that eventually became this blog was born.
As time goes on, I may also publish here some non-spoken-word pieces about my take on Life, The Universe, And Everything (cf. the works of Douglas Adams), and whatever else seems to fit.
